You know, it struck us that we’re dispensing lots of tips here for people who already have a start on the travelling thing to level up their game, but we’ve been pretty thin on useful advice for people just finding their feet out here in the big world.
So let’s make a start on fixing that today, shall we?
Our top recommendation for our Dear Young (or not so young!) Readers who would love to travel but don’t think they have the resources for it is: Look for organizations that host either volunteer foreign workers or student exchange programs.
Not only will this be greatly cheaper than being a normal tourist, it’s the kind of interest and experience that looks great on applications to college, your first job, and so forth. Win-win!
It’s very likely that your country has local programs particuarly well suited to you, so we’ll leave finding those as an exercise for the reader; but here, we’ll highlight one of the generally most respected of the large international volunteer facilitators:
What is Projects Abroad?
Projects Abroad is one of the largest volunteer abroad organizations in the world. Founded in 1992, we send 10,000 people abroad each year on a variety of service projects and internships overseas. All participants receive unparalleled in-country support from our full-time, professional staff to ensure that the experience is safe, worthwhile and fun.
Volunteer or intern abroad in Africa, Asia, Europe, or Latin America. We offer overseas voluntary work placements including teaching, care, conservation & environment, medicine & healthcare, journalism, law & human rights, international development, business, and more…
Go and read it all! At least, do so if you qualify under any of these categories of project…
Our standard Volunteer Abroad projects are for anyone 16 and older to undertake valuable service work to benefit the communities in which we work…
Our standard Intern Abroad projects are for anyone 16 or older to develop skills in a particular field. Volunteers work alongside local professionals in the role of an intern and help as needed…
High Schools Specials are for teens (16-19 years old) to join a group of their peers participating in worthwhile service and professional development projects…
Global Gap is for students taking a gap year between high school and college and want to spend the year traveling around the world doing volunteer work…
The Alternative Spring Break Trips are short programs for college students to volunteer abroad together over spring break…
These projects are structured the same as our Volunteer Abroad and Intern Abroad programs, but where volunteers work in roles where there is a specific need for people with professional experience…
Grown-up Specials are for anyone 50 or older to join volunteers of their own age on organized service trips in developing countries across the world…
… alright, aside from our Dear Middle School And Younger Readers, are there any of you at all that don’t see something appropriate for you there?
Nope, didn’t think so.
So if a perceived lack of resources or support has kept you from a life abroad so far — there’s your first lead on how to go about changing that!
